Contrary to some mistaken belief, sashimi is actually not a type of sushi. Sushi includes dishes that feature vinegared rice served with raw seafood or other ingredients. Whereas, sashimi is not served with any rice at all. Sashimi refers to thin raw meat or fish slices, and is sometimes accompanied by pickled ginger, soy sauce, or wasabi. Sometimes also, sashimi can be ordered as a topping or filling to sushi.
On the other hand, nigiri is indeed a type of sushi. It features thin slices of raw fish put on top of small balls of vinegared rice. Even so, the cooked variants are sometimes available. It can also come along with pickled ginger, soy sauce, or wasabi.
