Steel Cut Oats and Old Fashioned Oats are quite the same, but the process of how theses oats are made are quite different. First, let’s describe how are these two kinds of oats looking like. Well, you can actually directly differentiate them.

The Steel Cut Oats look like broken pieces of rice grains, but it is two times thicker than a regular rice. While the Old Fashioned Oats look like flattened whole grain oats. In the process of how these are oats made, the Steel Cut Oats are whole oat groats that are cut into pieces to reduce the cooking time. The Old Fashioned Oats or commonly known as Rolled Oats are steamed and rolled.

Cooking Time
The main difference between the two processes is that Steel Cut Oats are least processed while the Old Fashioned Oats must undergo steaming and rolling. Steel Cut Oats are least processed, but it consumes the most amount of cooking time. To cook a regular serving Steel Cut will take about 15 to 40 minutes while the Old Fashioned Oats will only take 5 to 10 minutes to cook. Steel Cut Oats will take two times of the amount of time cooking the Old Fashioned Oats.

Also, Steel Cut Oats will digest slowly than the Old Fashioned Oats because it is the least processed of all the oats and it is two times thicker than our regular rice.
